The hysteria over climate change, global warming, endangered polar bears, etc., is reaching new heights.

Now my utility company, PG&E, is joining forces with the U.S. government's climate change agenda and urging me to reduce my "carbon footprint" and energy usage.

I've had a succession of letters and postcards urging me to donate money to fight "climate change."

Now PG&E has a new scam — the "SmartACSwitch" program. PG&E will pay you $25 to voluntarily submit to the utility coming to your home to install a so-called "SmartAC Switch" that will turn your central air conditioner off via a wireless signal "during energy peaks."

Twenty five bucks so you can turn off my air conditioning when you want?

I don't think so. I've learned the prefix "smart" anything — "smart growth," "smart bombs," etc. — is a tipoff that something bad is coming.

This is definitely taking matters too far —- let's hope remote control of our AC stays voluntary.

It's not hard to imagine — given the current political climate and California Attorney General Jerry Brown's agenda — that such edicts may be mandatory in the future.
